Still unsure about the power of new media? Let me give you a little nudge. It happened just this morning.
There are multiple social networks available to “meet” with friends, business colleagues, clients, prospects and the like. I’m sure you’ve heard of them: Facebook, MySpace, Flickr, etc. I have so many accounts I can’t even keep track.
So, it was with a little skepticism that I read an email this morning from Twitter with a request for someone to “follow” me on the network. (Disclosure: my colleague blogged about Twitter in this space more than a year ago.) Since I was only in the preliminary testing stages of the network, researching potential advertising opportunities, I wasn’t convinced this connection was legitimate. The person’s ID did not sound familiar, that is until I signed on and looked into it more.
The result: she was an ad rep for a B2B publication relevant to two of my clients. The publication’s owner had directed the staff to register for Twitter and to start using it. So, the enterprising employees plugged my email address into the system (which had already been in their database) and, presto, my Twitter ID pops up. She and one of the editors opt to follow me and I reciprocated.
I wasn’t sure I knew either of the two people involved and I was curious as to exactly how they found out who I was and how I was relevant to what they do. So I called one of them and, after scaring her, she told me.
In the process, she connected me to the specific ad rep who handles my two clients, and I arranged booth interviews as well as ad rep meetings for both clients during a trade show later this month. It’s also generated this blog posting and there is one other idea twittering in my little head. That’s three or four cross marketing actions to advance the client and the agency.
No value? Hardly.
If you’re interested in following me on Twitter, search for my email address. If it’s relevant, I’ll reciprocate. In the meantime, checkout this youtube video: The Twitter Song
